Social Security Disability FAQs
Do I have to be permanently disabled to get Social Security disability benefits?
No. You must have been disabled for at least a year or be
expected to be disabled for at least a year or have a
condition that can be expected to result in
death (within a year).
You don't have to be permanently disabled to get Social
Security.
But Social Security doesn't have to expect that your condition will last forever for you to get disability.
Some people get benefits based on what's known as a "closed period" of disability. Benefits are paid for a year or more on those types of claims.
And, all disability recipients are reviewed periodically to see if they continue to be disabled.
