Anyone who is under retirement age and disabled can apply for and receive Social Security disability.

Children under the age of 18 can apply and receive children’s SSI benefits.

If you are over 50, but have not reached retirement age, there are some rules in the Social Security system that may make it easier for you to get disability benefits.

But it doesn’t matter what age you are. If you cannot work, or your child cannot function like other children his or her age, you should file an application for disability benefits.

How do I apply?

1. Call Social Security at 800-772-1213, or

2. Fill out an application online at www.ssa.gov. If you fill out the online application, be sure to print a receipt for the application and call SSA 1-2 weeks later to make sure they have received it and are processing it.
