Penalties For Failure to Comply with SSA's Requests for Information
March 2, 2006
The Social Security Administration has announced that it plans to extend to
recipients of SSDI benefits the same penalty that it imposes on SSI benefit
recipients when they fail to comply with SSA requests for additional
information.
They will suspend your benefits if you do not comply with requests for
additional information. Noncompliance after 12 months of suspension will result
in the termination of your disability benefits.
Your benefits could be resumed by contacting a local Social Security office
and providing the information requested within a 12-month period following the
initial suspension.
SSA is required to determine from time to time if a disabled beneficiary
continues to be disabled. Under these continuing disability reviews (CDRs), if
substantial evidence shows that there has been medical improvement and SSA
thinks you are now able to work, the SSA may find that you are no longer
disabled. This is why it is important that you continue to see your doctor and
document what your ongoing limitations are.
