Greetings,

This is a Workers' Compensation and Social Security Law Update from the Injury Disability Law Letter. We issue these Updates as newsworthy events take place in Workers' Compensation and Social Security disability law.

Medical
Democratic Rep. Morgan Carroll of Aurora introduced House Bill 1097 to let injured employees covered under workers' compensation request a change of doctors. A similar bill by Carroll last year became the most lobbied bill of the session and was eventually killed.

Worker
Newly intoduced House Bill 1082 seeks to prevent illegal immigrants from receiving any sort of workers compensation.

The Bell Policy Center, a Denver-based think tank, issued a report saying it would cost more to enforce a law barring illegal immigrants from getting state services than the services themselves.

Chart
After another year of failed reform, America's preferred plan to pay for Social Security and Medicare seems clear: Wait and see if we can muddle through. The program that began in 1935 is now projected to be unable to meet all its financial obligations by 2041.

Congress did make some cuts to Medicare last month. But it's a drop in the bucket compared with the costs of a new prescription-drug benefit. Medicare trustees say the program could face shortfalls starting in 2015, with the trust fund dry by 2020.

Call
Q. How do I know if I qualify for extra help with Medicare prescription drug costs?

A. You should get a letter from Medicare saying that you automatically qualify for extra help. If you don't automatically qualify, Social Security is sending people with limited income resources an "Application for Help with Medicare Prescription Drug Plan Costs." If you think you may qualify, call 800-772-1213 or visit www.socialsecurity.gov. After you complete the application, Social Security will mail you a letter telling you if you qualify for extra help.

Sincerely,
